Pyney’s 🥧 Reviews
Dernancourt Bakehouse
( Dernancourt SA)
My stay in Adelaide was brief, I was there for the Galipo Trade Show to meet with sponsors and film some content. On the morning of the tradeshow, I decided to do a sneaky review and visit the Dernancourt Bakehouse.
Dernancourt is a north-eastern suburb of Adelaide, located approximately 10 kilometres from the Adelaide CBD. The bakery is located at 840 Lower North East Road and has been around since the late 90’s.
Current owners Ben and Nicole took over in January 2025 and the place is open Tuesday – Sunday. Ben has been in the baking game for over 25 years and even started his journey in this very building back in 2001.
This is one well layed out bakery. The cabinets are sensational and everything flows like clock work. The cabinets are totally filled with freshly baked products and the options are endless. As my visit coincided with the morning rush, time wasn’t on my side, I needed to get this review started.
You will find all your classic favourites here and they all look sensational. After looking at the menu, Ben asked me did I like my pepper 🥧’s on the hotter side ? The simple answer is Yes !!! Ben said his pepper 🥧’s had a little sting in them and they are extremely popular. So the chunky pepper was the one I went with.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – $6.80 represented great value in my opinion. The 🥧 was a healthy size in depth and diameter and weighed in at a smidge under 250 grams 9/10
2. Meat/Fill Ratio – Totally Full 10/10
3. Flavour – Ben wasn’t wrong when he said this 🥧 had some extra sting. From the very first bite you felt the pepper corns and pepper steak seasoning. The meat chucks were super tender and the gravy sauce was superb. I really enjoyed the flavour, but the hotness won’t be for everyone 8/10
4. Pastry – Certainly a mixed bag here. The color and shape couldn’t be faulted and there was minimal shrinkage. The stability was also on point and the structure of the 🥧 was excellent. Both bakes and sides were too thick and the bakes were a little underdone as well (pics will show) 6/10
5. Serving Temperature – Perfect serving temp, zero issues here 10/10
Overall Rating
🥧🥧 43/50 🥧🥧
This was a really good product, and in my opinion it was only the bakes and bake thinknesses that needed tweaking. The $6.80 price tag is well priced and the 🥧 was full. The flavour really hit the spot and it had some serious kick to it which I enjoyed. The flavour couldn’t be faulted, but as previously mentioned the hotness won’t suit everyone. Overall I really enjoyed this 🥧 and would easily have another one. Great work Ben.
A massive thanks to Ben and Nicole for having me in on very short notice. You took a gamble just over 12 months ago, going out on your own and the hard work is paying off, you’re doing an awesome job. I love the fact your kids are in the bakery helping you along with this journey, that’s very special. All the best guys, it was lovely to meet you.
As always thanks for the ongoing support and keep supporting 🇦🇺 bakeries and don’t forget to invite all your friends to the page.
