Cuppas on the Cape
This weeks review is something very different, totally left field and a story I had to share.
Soon after arriving in Bowen, I quickly lined up a review at the towns famous “Jochheims Bakery”Prior to that visit, I was strolling along the water front and noticed a sign saying “Homemade Pies” then a gooseneck horse trailer. This had to be a massive gee up. This was a horse trailer turned into a pop up cafe/bar/coffee/cake and joint. This was gold and I knew I had to meet the owner.
Emma Dahl is the genius behind this gooseneck and Cuppas on the Cape. A country girl through and through, Emma grew up in and around the Charters Towers.
Her love for horses and camp drafting took her along many different job paths across Queensland, working as a teacher and governess in rural and remote communities, droving cattle, and working in stock a camp as a cook and stock-women.
In 2019 Emma had this crazy idea of remodeling a gooseneck trailer into a cafe on wheels. Not long after this crazy idea was floated, she was saying farewell to horses and hello to coffee, beers and ’s !!!!
Emma and her trailer have moved around various locations before settling in the picturesque town on Bowen. This gooseneck trailer is next level and has everything on offer plus much more. My favorite by far is the hot ’s and the cold ’s on tap. The iron on the main counter gives the trailer a rustic charm and was taken from her family’s original homestead that dates back to the 1920’s.
Now the space in this trailer is quite small as were the options. So the day I was there only beef ’s were available. Now I must warn you these are not your normal ’s. They are a cross between a and a jaffle. They looked and smelt crazy good and it was time to hook in.
THE REVIEW
1. Value for Money – 5 bucks was bloody awesome value. This /toastie/jaffle was quite big and was in two tubes. I would easy buy another at this price. Great value. 9.5/10
2. Meat Ratio – Full, Full and Full. This creation had zero room left in it. 10/10
3. Meat Flavour – Absolutely sensational. Fine grade beef, onion and oregano. Simple beef stock and Emma’s special gravy, topped off with tomato and black sauce. This creation was so so good. Loved this flavor . 9.5/10
4. Pastry – Stability was perfect and the whole thing never moved one bit. The pastry was incredibly crusty and full of flavor. 8/10
5. Temperature – perfectly cooked !!!! 10/10
Overall Rating
47/50
As mentioned this wasn’t your normal review or , but it was simply sensational. The $5 price tag was ridiculously cheap and the flavor was fantastic. I absolutely loved this and would have another one in a instant. What’s even better you can enjoy your and wash it down with a couple of cold ’s.
Cuppas on the Cape is easy to find. It’s located on Santa Barbra Parade right near the park. Open Monday to Friday from 5am and weekends from 8am. If your in and around the Bowen area, this quirky joint is a absolute must stop over.
Emma your journey and business story is phenomenal and you deserve every success that comes your way. Your hard work and never say never attitude is very infectious. This trailer is epic !!! I’ve never seen anything like it in my life. A huge thanks for giving up your precious time and allowing me to share this story.
