Cobden Bakery

After leaving Terang i made the slight detour off the Princess Highway and made my way down to the small town of Cobden. Cobden is located 208 kilometres southwest of Melbourne. Situated just 10 minutes from the Princes Highway and 30 minutes north of the Great Ocean Road. The town also has a ripping little bakery which i was keen to check out.
The Cobden Bakery is located in Curdie street and is currently operated by a wonderful couple named John and Andrea. The bakery itself has been in operation for 50 to 60 years and John and Andrea are approaching their 17th anniversary this September.
Baking exceptional products has been in John’s blood for over 40 years and all his wonderful products are on display in the jammed packed cabinets. Speaking of the cabinets Andrea and her team do an awesome job keeping these cabinets full and I’ve gotta say the place is absolutely spotless clean. There is also a great little seating area inside to sit and relax. As i still had a couple of hours driving to do, we decided to head over to the warmer and get started.
14 flavors on the menu board, featuring the likes of bacon, mushroom, onion, curry and many more. This week I went with my trusty old favourite “Pepper” John said this one had a little kick to it and it’s a favourite with the locals.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – $6.50 for this 🥧 and all the flavored 🥧’s here is terrific value. While it wasn’t a huge 🥧 in depth, it was still more than satisfactory. With increase in prices it’s pretty rare to find a 🥧 in the 6 dollar range. 8.5/10
2. Meat/Fill Ratio – Totally full 10/10
3. Flavour – Nothing fancy just a good old pepper steak 🥧 with a little bit of kick to it. I wouldn’t say it was too hot but it would definitely be on the medium scale of things which I really enjoyed. The mince was also cooked really well. Really enjoyable flavour. 8/10
4. Pastry – The overall standard of this pastry was great. Beautifully shaped round 🥧 with very minimal shrinkage and the stability was excellent. The colour was also more then acceptable and the pastry taste was devine. The top bake and thickness were on point, but the bottom bake and thickness needed a tweak. The pics will show the bottom bake needed more time in the oven. Apart from that the pastry was really good 8/10
5. Serving Temperature – Perfect serving temp. No issues at all. 10/10

You can clearly see this isn’t John’s first rodeo, he bakes a quality product and has been doing so for 40 years. As mentioned this is your classic pepper mince 🥧 and it didn’t disappoint. The scoring categories were very consistent, but for me I particularly enjoyed the flavour. Also $6.50 is extremely well price and it was totally full. Great job John I really enjoyed this one, don’t change a thing.
If you’re on the Princess Highway, take the short detour and pop into Cobden. This bakery is definitely worth the stop in, plus while your there explore this beautiful town.
A massive thanks to John and Andrea for having me in, showing me around and for their incredible hospitality. I know I use this line a lot, but this is your classic old school bakery and John is your classic old school baker. He rocks up every day bakes outstanding products and he’s been doing this for over 40 years. Plus this legend can be seen out the back baking products in a pair of county cricket whites, now thats gold. John and Andrea deserve every success that comes there way, I’m so glad I went to Cobden and met this lovely couple.
