Cobb’s Bakery
(Port Fairy VIC)

June 2025

After almost loosing a couple of toe’s due to frost bite 😂 I decided to head further south hoping to catch some slightly warmer weather. I made camp at the pitchesque coastal town of Port Fairy. The plan was to relax for a few days, explore parts of the Great Ocean Road and visit
Cobb’s Bakery.

Port Fairy is a historic fishing town located on Victoria’s far south-west coast on the Moyne river, between Portland and Warrnambool. Port Fairy is also home to Victoria’s oldest continuously licensed pub, the Caledonian Inn (also known as The Stump), which dates back to 1844. The bakery opened years ater in 1890 and still stands today.

Since its opening 132 years ago the bakery has seen many owners and name changes come and go. The current name Cobb’s Bakery has been around for 60 plus years and at present is owned and operated by father and son Trevor and Jason with the help of close friend Ash. It was Ash who I met up with on the day of my visit and he was kind enough to show me around and share his bakeries incredible history.

Ash started his apprenticeship here 21 years ago and came on as an owner in early 2024. The bakery is open 7 days a week and employs over 20 plus staff. This is another bakery with a really impressive cabinet display. From the moment you walk in the door all the beautiful products are laid out and the cabinets flow incredibly well. After meeting the team and checking out the massive production area, it was time to hit the warmer and choose a 🥧 to review.

There’s a terrific selection of 🥧’s on offer here including the classic “Plain Meat 🥧” I thought it would be an injustice of this 132 year bakery if I didn’t try its original flavoured 🥧. I believe the plain 🥧 is still a favourite with most 🥧 punters and I couldn’t wait to get started.

🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧

1. Value for Money – $6 is fantastic value for any 🥧 including this one. Another square 🥧 and yes the baking tins used here are quite small in the depth department, but at $6 it’s priced extremely well. 8.5/10

2. Meat/Fill Ratio – Once again the baking tins may be lacking in the depth department, but this 🥧 was totally full. 10/10

3. Flavour – This is your classic basic plain meat 🥧 and the flavour was really good. Nothing fancy just mince a little onion, salt and pepper. That little touch of onion gave the 🥧 that little extra flavour, but overall you’d be happy with this product. 7.5/10

4. Pastry – Shape, top color, shrinkage and stability all couldn’t be faulted. Both bake thinknesses were ok but sadly both bakes were underdone and needed more time in the oven particularly the bottom bake. Could’ve been a once off, but this has affected the overall score. 6/10

5. Serving Temperature – Perfect serving temp. No issies at all. 10/10

Overall Rating
🥧🥧 42/50 🥧🥧

This plain 🥧 didn’t disappoint. Let’s start with the negatives, both bakes needed more time in the oven and that’s a easy fix. The 🥧 was priced extremely well, despite the smallish depth in the tins. The shape, stability and shrinkage of the pastry were all very good. For me the flavour was great
for a plain 🥧, it had a bit of flavour which was good to see. Overall, a few things to work on but a good product and one I’m glad I chose.

Add this bakery to your Port Fairy travel plans. The best part is, it’s practically open all day every day so if you need that last minute item the crew here will look after you.

A huge thanks to Ash and his team for having me in. It’s a shame I didn’t get to meet Jason and Trevor it just means I’ve gotta come back to this beautiful area again. I reached out to Ash and he came back to me straight away which is greatly appreciated. This is a huge operation and Ash, Jason and Trevor are doing a wonderful job and I wish them all the best.

Port Fairy is a really nice place with so much to see and do. The food, pubs even the golf course are all sensational. Plus it’s a great spot to park up for a few days and explore parts of the great ocean road.

As always thanks for the ongoing support and keep supporting 🇦🇺 bakeries and don’t forget to invite all your friends to the page.
