Pyney’s 🥧 Reviews
Casper’s Pie’s and Pastries
(Bayswater Melb VIC)
Our stay at Nicholson River was bloody beautiful but it was time to keep pressing forward and continue on with the 🥧 tour. I had to make a short stop over in Melbourne for several meetings. While I was there I got a call from a fantasic fella named David. David is the owner of Casper’s Pies & Pastries and he invited me over to his Bayswater factory and shop to review his 🥧’s.
Casper’s Pies & Pastries was founded in the Melbourne suburb of Bayswater in 1989. In January 2020 right when Covid was flaring up David purchased this family run outfit and the timing couldn’t have been worse. David has been in the food service game most of his working life but juggling Covid times was a whole new ball game.
These days while Melbourne sleeps, the ovens at Casper’s are already warm. As a wholesale 🥧 supplier, they have grown from a simple meat 🥧 to crafting over 100 flavours that you’ll find across hundreds of venues interstate – from your local cafe to the famous Melbourne Cup 🐎.
It was during Covid when David came up with the idea of turning the front office into a little retail shop. This has enabled the hungry 🥧 punters to swing by and grab their daily 🥧 fix. The little shop has fresh 🥧’s in the warmer, or you can choose cold seconds at a discounted rate or maybe a family sized take away 🥧. David was kind enough to give me a tour of this impressive set up. The state of the art equipment and quality control is fantasic. The look of all these 🥧’s got the heart racing so we decided to head over to the warmer and get started.
Dead set, the menu book here is thicker then the bible. There are SO many flavours to choose from, in fact there are 33 !!! Yes that’s right 33 different flavours that cover every flavour imaginable. Picking one to review could have easily taken a fortnight maybe longer, but in the end I went with a particular flavour I’ve never reviewed before and that was “Harissa Lamb”. The ingredients in this 🥧 looked and sounded incredible, I couldn’t wait to get started.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – $6.90 in my opinion was great value, while it wasn’t the biggest of 🥧’s, it was still a decent size and totally full. Overall, it was priced accordingly considering its size and great value. 8.5/10
2. Meat/Fill Ratio – As you would expect this was a full 🥧 and you’d be extremely happy with the fill in this 🥧. Zero complaints here. Well done. 10/10
3 Flavour – listen to this – slow cooked lamb, onion, paprika, garlic, chili flakes, turmeric, coriander, capsicum, lemon juice and a few other secret ingredients. This 🥧 had everything and the flavour reflected it. This was a really nice flavoured 🥧. The chili flakes gave it a little bit of an extra bite, but nothing that would scare you off. Well done team, great flavoured 🥧. 9/10
4. Pastry – To be honest there wasn’t much wrong with the standard of this pastry. The color, shape, shrinkage, and most importantly the stability were all excellent. The top color in particular was excellent the bottom was a smidge pale but only a smidge. Both bake thicknesses were very good which is always good to see. Both the top and bottom bakes were marginally underbaked, and I mean marginally (pic will show) this was the only negative in what was a very impressive pastry. 9/10
5. Serving Temperature – Smidge hot but nothing to worry about. 9.5/10
Overall Rating
🥧🥧 46/50 🥧🥧
For a mass produced product it was very impressive. This is a huge operation and the presentation of this 🥧 was fantastic and it tasted even better. The flavour for me was the favourite part, all those ingredients blended well and left a lasting impression. The pastry was also super impressive and $6.90 is we’ll priced. Not much to work on just a few little tweaks here and there. Overall the team have done a wonderful job with this product and I cannot recommend it high enough. Great job guys.
If your’re out in the Baywater area you 100% need to check this joint out. Also if your’re a tradie and need a quick bite, this place will be right up your alley. It’s easy to find, onsite parking available and your’re sure to find a bargin. The 🥧’s in the warmer are very well priced, the seconds on sale are even cheaper and the family 🥧’s looked great.
David a huge thank you for reaching out and inviting me into your amazing business. Not only is David a smart operator, he’s a ripper fella as well. This is another Covid surviving success story. The timing of your purchase back in January 2020 would have had your heart racing to say the least. Since those dark days, through sheer hard work, forward planning and a terrific business sense you’ve gone ahead in leaps and bounds. It was great to to meet you and the next time I’m cheering a winner down the Flemington straight I’m sure to have a Casper’s 🥧 in hand.
As always thanks for the ongoing support and keep supporting 🇦🇺 bakeries and don’t forget to invite all your friends to the page.
