Bordertown Bakery
(Bordertown SA)
With the trade show done and dusted it was time to hit the road and start making our way towards VIC. After a full day on the road we decided to have a overnight stay at the Apsley Hotel, but before we got destination we quickly popped into Bordertown to meet Matt and Jess from the
Bordertown Bakery.
Bordertown, South Australia, is most famous for its unique colony of rare white kangaroos, a vibrant agricultural industry, and the birthplace former Prime Minister Bob Hawke. It’s located about 20km from the Victorian border.
The Bordertown bakery is situated at 99 Farquhar Street and is open Monday to Saturday and employs just over 20 staff. Owners Matt and Jess have had this place for just over 12 years and are the 10th owners of this bakery. When they took the place over a decade ago they had zero baking experience whatsoever. Matt was working FIFO in the mines and exchanged changing tyres and working away to baking 🥧’s, bread of having the joys night shift baking.
The building itself is massive and has a full seating area attached to the bakery. Matt and Jess also wholesell their amazing products all around the area making this a serious operation. After getting the tour of this 65 year old building and filming some content it was time to check out the menu and down a few 🥧’s.
14 plus flavours to choose from on the menu and the options are all fantastic. After looking at the board Matt’s popular “cheeseburger” and “Sunday Roast” caught my attention but it was his “Lamb Yiros” that had me intrigued. I’ve had plenty of Yiros’s in my time, but never had one in a 🥧 and I was super keen to give this one a try.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – $7.95 is starting to creep up there, but lamb isn’t cheap at the moment and this was a healthy sized 🥧. I didn’t get the chance to weigh it but it was quite heavy and full. 7.5/10
2. Meat/Fill Ratio – Jammed packed as pics will show. 10/10
3. Flavour – The flavour was awesome !! A combination of both mince and chunky lamb with added garlic, onion and seasoning. If you wanted Tzatziki sauce on top it’s available and it will certainly add a difference to the flavour. Zero complaints here, thoughly enjoyed 9/10
4. Pastry – The overall pastry was very good, in fact all the 🥧’s i sampled were extremely consistent. All the major aspects like the shape, color, shrinkage and stability were all great and the pastry itself tasted superb. The bakes were nearly perfect as was the bake thickness. In my opinion Matt and his baking team have done a wonderful job with this pastry 9/10
5. Serving Temperature – Perfect serving temp, zero issues here 10/10
Overall Rating
🥧🥧 45.5/50 🥧🥧
Who would have thought Yiros in a 🥧 would work and guess what it totally worked. I’m so glad I tried this particular flavour it was fabulous. The flavour and pastry were excellent and added Tzatziki sauce is a must. Matt’s consistency with his pastry was really good particularly the bake thickness. Fantastic product guys, highly recommend. Side noted Matt’s cheeseburger 🥧 was delicious and also needs to be added to your 🥧 list.
Take the short drive off the highway and check out this bakery, it’s a little beauty. If your towing a caravan, there is a designated parking area for caravans a short stroll from the bakery.
Matt and Jess are absolute legends and have run cracking business. 12 years ago they jumped into the deep end and haven’t looked back. Yes, like many small businesses they have had there up’s and downs, but what they have achieved here is amazing. Thank you so much for having me in guys, it was a pleasure meeting you and I wish you all the best in the future you deserve it.
As always thanks for the ongoing support and keep supporting 🇦🇺 bakeries and don’t forget to invite all your friends to the page.
