Big Dads Pie Boondall

2024 🥧 Tour
Review no 7
Big Dads Pies
(Boondall QLD)

For this weeks review I headed off to the northan suberbs of Brisbane to review an old school 🥧 shop. Located on Sandgate road opposite Nudgee College you will find Big Dad’s Pies Boondall.

This classic 🥧 shop has been in operation for over nearly 18 years and current owners Dale and Sharlene have been at the helm since day dot. Sharlene and Dale had no baking experience when they took over this place. Sharlene was a rep for a fashion business and Dale worked in finance game for AGC.

As mentioned earlier this is your old school 🥧 shop with a great selection of 🥧’s, cakes and salads.
This place can get crazy busy especially during school lunch times, and weekends when sport is happening across the road at the college. I’m fairly certain the boarders appreciate the fine quality of food on offer here. I myself spent 5 years at a boarding school and I jumped at every chance to escape boarding life and eat some real food.

It was quite busy the day of my visit, so I didn’t want to take up to much of Dale and Sharlene’s time and decided to get cracking.
There is a good selection of flavours to choose from here and for this weeks review, but I decided to go with something a little different. Sharlene suggested I try one of their “BBQ Pulled Pork 🥧’s” The smell of this thing was sensational and I was chomping at the bit to get started.

🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧

1. Value for Money – $6.30
did represent awesome value. This was a heavy 🥧 weighing in at 316 grams which is well above the industry standard. The 🥧 also had great depth to it as well. Outstanding value !!! 10/10

2. Meat Ratio – No issues here at all, this 🥧 was almost full. Maybe a fraction more could have been squeezed in just under the lid, but overall you would be pretty happy with the fill in this one 9.5/10

3. Flavour – Pretty good !!! The threaded pork had a really nice taste to it, while the rich bbq smoked gravy sauce gave this 🥧 some real added flavor. The only negative was the bbq gravy sauce was a bit runny which made it a little tricky to attack without spilling. 8/10

4. Pastry – The pastry of this 🥧 was pretty good. The shape and color were of high standard. The pastry stability was pretty good, but as mentioned earlier the gravy sauce was a little runny. The bottom bake was the perfect thickness and cooked right through, while the top was a little thick and slightly underbaked (wet lines evident in pics) Overall the pastry of this 🥧 was more than acceptable. 8/10

5. Serving Temperature – This little bugger was a little hot and i had to wait a minute or two before getting stuck into it. 8.5/10

Overall Rating
🥧🥧 44/50 🥧🥧

A few minor points to work on here and there, but apart from that this was a great product. The value for money for this 🥧 was insane and it was just about full as well. The flavor was excellent with the only negative being the gravy sauce being a little runny.
Although a little runny the smoked bbq sauce was beautiful and really made this 🥧 what it was. Sharlene 100% got this recommendation right and I would have no hesitation having another one.

This is a another 🥧 shop to add to your list. Just time your visit well as this 🥧 place can get crazy busy. If your over the road watching any type of sport and craving a good old fashion meat 🥧, then this place will have you covered.

As always a huge thanks to Dale and Sharlene for their amazing hospitality. These guys are salt of the earth people who have worked incredibly hard over the years and have made the decision to retire when this place sells. I wish them all the best in the future and enjoy retirement.
