The Sydney reviews contine to roll on and this next visit was one I stumbled across by complete accident. I was walking along busy Darling Road in the Sydney suburb of Balmain, when a saw a couple of award certificates from the recent The Official Great Aussie Pie Competition in a cafe window. I stopped, read the certificates then saw a 🥧 warmer filled with some absolute beautiful 🥧’s. I was standing outside the
Berlin Bakr and from that moment I knew I had to pop my head in and introduce myself.
The Berlin Bakr is located at 249 Darling Street Balmain and is owned and operated by a awesome lady named Melody who has had this cafe for over little over 3 years. Melody is no stranger to the food service industry having run and operated cafés for many years throughout Sydney.
The interior of this cafe is super classy and the cabinets are filled with a great selection of incredible handmade products. Then the menu is quite extensive and covers both breakfast and lunch. From your classic eggs benny to gourmet burgers there is something here for everyone. The Berlin Benny certainly had my serious attention, but I was here for 🥧’s.
As you can imagine 🥧’s and sausage rolls are an added feature at the cafe and the menu only has two flavours available (Beef or Chicken). I did try both flavours, the chicken was great, but it was the slow cooked beef that I wanted to review.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – I’m not going to lie $10 is certainly creeping up there in price, however I did have to consider two factors. The first one was the location, Balmain is considered a trendy inner Sydney suburb and everything around here is not cheap. Secondly the 🥧 weighed in at a healthy 260 grams which is considered above industry standard. Overall pretty good value 7.5/10
2. Meat/Fill Ratio – The 🥧 was about 90% full. A couple extra spots could have been filled here and there, but overall very good value 9/10
3. Flavour – Excellent !!! in fact the flavour was the best part of this 🥧. Slow cooked beef, carrots, onions, celery and added worcestershire sauce. The combination of flavours was fantastic and they all worked well together. The slow cooked beef was cooked beautifully and I loveed the worcestershire sauce. Great work guys, loved this flavour well done. 9/10
4. Pastry – Another 🥧 where the top pastry color was absolutely sensational. The top bake was golden and the outside of the 🥧 was all beautifully hand crimped. The shape and stability were both excellent as well and the 🥧 held firm to the last bite. The bottom bake and thinkness we’re both fantastic and could hardly be faulted. The top bake needed more puff and lamination and the photos will back this up. The pic will also show the top bake sinking a bit in the middle and that’s a easy fix. When the 🥧 was cut in half, you could see the hand crimped edges were ever so slightly underbaked, this is going to happen with the thickness of the crimping from time to time. Overall a few tiny things to tweak nothing major. In my opinion this pastry was more than acceptable and tasted really great. 8/10
5. Serving Temperature – Perfect serving temp !!! 10/10

Overall, this was a really good product and one I wouldn’t hesitate having again. The lads in the kitchen have come up with terrific flavored 🥧 with a great combination of ingredients that has worked a treat. The pastry needed a couple tweaks here and there but overall it was very good. The 🥧 was 90% full and at $10 was still reasonable value. Great job team this 🥧 it was a very consistent product. Highly recommended.
If your around the Balmain area the Berlin Bakr is 100% worth visiting. Whether it’s a 🥧, a hearty breakfast or a sensational groumet burger this trendy cafe has everything. Trust me me you won’t go hungry or leave disappointed.
A massive thanks to Melody and her incredible staff for having me in. I’ve said it many times before, it can be very daunting for someone to rock up to your business unannounced and want to review your products. Melody took in all in her stride and I’m so privileged that she welcomed me with open arms and was happy for me to share her 🥧 journey with you all.
