Bam Cafe
(Hobart TAS)
FEB 2025
My time in Southern Tasmania had almost come to an end. I just had one more visit to do in Hobart before making my way up to Launceston to MC Jarrod and Emma‘s wedding. When I arrived in Tasmania a few weeks earlier, I received a message from a gentleman named Jamie. mentioned he recently opened up a new bakery in the Hobart suburb of New Town. He flicked me is number and said pop in and say gday when I was coming back into town. So when I got to Hobart I dropped Jamie a message and lined up the visit.
Bam Cafe is located at 251 New Town Road New Town (Hobart) Hobart’s newest bakery was opened in January this year. Jamie has been in the industry for over 30 years, starting with National Pies. Jamie’s life changed when he got cancer in his mid 30’s, was given only 6 months to live and spent 39 days in a coma. After a tough period he came out the other side stronger then ever and focused on his two passions and that was baking and horse racing. In recent years Jamie has had a bakery in Vietnam where he introduced the locals to his delicious products including 🥧’s. He’s also one of Tasmania’s most respected horse racing identities and still involved in the racing game today.
This cafe/bakery has got plenty of seating inside and out and the range on offer here is outstanding. Jamie makes everything from scratch and also has an impressive breakfast menu. Also all the burgers on the menu are named after his favourite movies. After chatting for ages and to be fair most of it was complete dribble it was time to get started and try a few 🥧’s.
Jamie has a great selection of 🥧’s on offer here headlined by the famous “Tassie Scallop 🥧” but it was another flavour that caught my attention. This was his “Curried Chicken” I was told by a few people, that it’s nothing flash but just a really nice flavoured 🥧. That was all the info I neeed and that was the one I was going to review.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – $7 for this 🥧 was well priced. It weighed in just over 260 grams and was a fairly decent size in weight and diameter. This was a easy score to adjudicate at $7 this 🥧 in my opinion was more than affordable. 8.5/10
2. Meat/Fill Ratio – Totally full with fresh threaded chicken. 10/10
3. Flavour – This was just a basic “Keen’s’ curry mix but it tasted fantastic. The threaded chicken tasted sensational. The curry wasn’t overpowering and blended into the chicken beautifully, nothing that flash just a really nice flavoured 🥧. Great job. 8.5/10
4. Pastry – Overall Jamie has done a pretty good job with this one. Shape, colour, shrinkage were all very good as was the pastry flavour. The bottom half of the 🥧 was a little soft but the stability was excellent and the 🥧 didn’t move one bit. The bake thicknesses was ok maybe a smidge too thick, however both bakes and sides were underdone and needed more time in the oven. Only a couple minor tweaks need. 8/10
5. Serving Temperature – Excellent serving temp. Straight out of the oven and into the mouth. 10/10
Overall Rating
🥧🥧 45/50 🥧🥧
This was a really nice 🥧 and one I would have again in a heart beat. The curry was the old classic “Keen’s” mix and did the job. The threaded chicken tasted devine and complimented the curry extremely well. The $7 price tag was on the money, the 🥧 was full and it was served at the perfect temperature. The pastry was pretty good with only a couple of little issues that needed tweaking. Overall Jamie has done a terrific job with this product. Speaking of products, his curried scallop 🥧 was sensational and gee wizz it had a little bit of sting to it. Make sure you keep an eye out for that one.
You won’t meet a better bloke than Jaimie and I cannot thank him enough for reaching out to me and sharing his incredible story. The positivity that this legend displays all day every day is very infectious. What he has achieved in the small amount of time here is amazing and he deserves every success that comes his way. 100% add this cafe/bakery to your Tasmania travel plans, as its a little beauty.
