2025 Pyney’s 🥧 Reviews
Review No 36
Bakehouse Cafe
(Erina NSW)

May 2025

The Newcastle and Central Coast 🥧 Tour was coming to an end with only a couple more to visits booked in before I headed up to the Hunter Valley region. After leaving Wadalba I made the short trip down to the very picturesque area of Erina. I was on my to meet a ripping laf named Paul who is the owner of the Bakehouse Cafe.

Owner Paul had been in the baking game for over 40 plus years. Starting out as a fresh faced 17 year old Paul had to beg and plead for a job in this industry and inthe early days could barely put food on the table. Fast forward 40 years Paul now has 6 highly successful stores scattered around the Central Coast area.

I met Paul at his stunning Aston Road location which has a real industrial feel about it. The layout is just as impressive as the cabinet display. The bread, cakes, sweets and sandwich bar all looked absolutely fabulous, but it was the 🥧’s in the 🥧 warmer that I was most interested in.

There is only a small selection of flavours on the menu, but enough to cater for everyone. Over the previous week, I’d consumed enough brisket and beef 🥧’s to feed a small nation, so for this review I went with one of the chicken flavours on the menu. The one ran with was the “Thai green curry with chicken” and gee wizz it looked good.

🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧

1. Value for Money – $7.95 is certainly creeping up there, but the 🥧 weighed a healthy 265 grams and was a decent size in depth and diameter. It was also totally full which was good to see and filled with 100% chicken breast. Overall more then reasonable value compared to others I’ve reviewed. 7.5/10

2. Meat/Fill Ratio – Very healthy fill ratio !!! This bugger was totally full 10/10

3. Flavour – The flavour in this 🥧 was terrific. 100% chicken breast, with
Bakehouse green curry, fresh ginger, coriander and coconut cream. All the flavours were evident with every bite. The chicken breast pieces were a very healthy size and cooked perfectly. In terms of hotness I would say this one was a mild curry and would cater for nearly everyone. The yeam have done a great job with this one. Well done. 9/10

4. Pastry – The overall standard of this pastry was very good with only the top and bottom bakes that needed work. Both were underdone as pics will verify. Bake thicknesses were satisfactory, maybe just a smidge on the thick side. On the positive side, the pastry flavour was superb, the colour and shape were all of a high quality and for a decent weighted 🥧 the stability was excellent. 8/10

5. Serving Temperature – Perfect serving temp 10/10

Overall Rating
🥧🥧 45.5/50 🥧🥧

This was a wonderful product and one I would have again no problems at all. Chicken is not my regular go to, but I do love currries and this was just a great Thai chicken curry plonked in pastry. The score in all the categories were very consistent, with the flavour being my favourite part. To be fair there wasn’t much wrong with this 🥧, with only a few minor tweaks needed here and there. Great job Paul and team you’ve done a sterling job with this one.

If you want a relaxing and chilled ambience your going to love the Aston Rd store. Then the food options will blow you away. 100% add this place to your list you won’t be disappointed.

A big thanks to Paul for having me in and showing me around, what a absolute legend he is. He had no idea who I was, doesn’t have social media, but soon saw my passion for this industry and was more more than willing to have me in and share is 🥧 journey. Paul is a real inspiration and his journey is incredible. What he has achieved and built is amazing and this has been done on blood, sweat and tears. It was great to meet and spend time with you mate and I wish you all the very best.

As always thanks for the ongoing support and keep supporting 🇦🇺 bakeries and don’t forget to invite all your friends to the page.
