Bakehouse13
(Torquay QLD)
OCT 2024
After smashing a few 🥧’s at Cake Bake Brew it was time to jump in the car and head to my next visit. Next on the list was Bakehouse13.
Bakehouse 13 is located in Bideford Street Torquay right next to the Spar grocery store. Owners Chris and Leanne have had this place for almost 5 years. While only tiny the presentation is beautiful and the constricted layout works a treat. The products on display looked stunning particularly the assortment of cakes and sweet treats, these things looked incredible. These guys also wholesale there products all across the Hervey Bay region, including shops, cafes and schools. Time wasn’t on our side as both Craig and myself were booked in for a very important tee time ⛳️. So with that in mind we made our way over to the warmer.
Plenty of variety to choose from with over 12 different flavours on the menu. For this week I wanted to try something a little different and a flavour I hadn’t had for a very long time and that was a breakfast eggs benny 🥧 !!! steak, spinach, bacon, cheese, egg with hollandaise sauce. This thing looks huge and I couldn’t wait to get started.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – $7.20 was sensational value of a breakfast 🥧 of this size and weight. This beast weighed 330grams and that’s approximately 100grams over industry standard. Yes people will say the ingredients are basic but still it’s a big 🥧 and it was just over $7 which is great value. Easy one to score 9.5/10
2. Meat/Fill Ratio – Totally full and fella was heavy !!! Great job. 10/10
3. Flavour – Not bad at all !!! Every bite you could taste every ingredient and the hollandaise sauce was the exact amount. The only negative and this was tiny. The egg was a little dry, but apart from that the flavor in this 🥧 was great. As far as eggs benny 🥧’s go this was a little beauty. 8.5/10
4. Pastry – Some good parts and some that needed work, let’s start with the good. The color particuly the top bake was great, while the shape and shrinkage were both satisfactory. The top bake was excellent with nice layers and the top bake tasted great. Onto the negatives, the bottom bake was very soft therefore making the stability a little tricky. Given it was a heavy 🥧 the bottom bake needed to be firmer to hold its weight. The bottom bake also has wet lines on the side and bottom and was a tad undercooked. Overall a few things to work on, but the pastry was still acceptable. 6.5/10
5. Serving Temperature – This bugger was a little hot but nothing outrageous. 9.5/10
Overall Rating
🥧🥧 44/50 🥧🥧
Overall this product was more than acceptable and tasted great. It’s been almost two years since I reviewed an eggs benny 🥧and I’m so glad I chose this one. This was a big 🥧 weighing in at 330grams and $7.20 in my opinion is still a little cheap. The 🥧 was full to the brim and the flavour was quite good. The negatives were nothing that cannot be fixed, but getting that bottom bake right for a 🥧 of this weight is paramount. Great job with this one team, very enjoyable.
Big thanks to Leanne and Chris for having me in on short notice and taking the time to share their 🥧 journey. This is just another example of a hard working couple having a crack and making a real go of it. I’m so glad I popped in to say gday and I’m sure I will see Craig again out at the golf course.
Hervey Bay has grown immensely since I lived there 27 years ago and it’s a place that has everything including quality bakeries. I stayed at the Scarness Beachfront Tourist Park. This was a terrific park in a terrific location and 100% worth the stay.
