2025 Pyney’s 🥧 Reviews
Review No 29
Baked Uprising
(Newcastle NSW)

April 2025

The Central Coast and Newcastle 🥧 tour continued to roll on and after leaving the Redhead Bakehouse I made my way up to Newcastle or as the locals call it Newy. I was on my way to see Kyle and the team at
Baked Uprising.

Baked Uprising is located in Downie Street Maryville. When you’re snaking your way through this residential area, the last thing you would expect to find is a bakery. This is another joint that gets crazy busy so just look for the mass of cars and that will lead you to the place.

The award winning bakery is mostly known for its huge variety of sourdough breads and delicious pastries. Alice first opened up this bakery 14 years ago, then Kyle joined the team 4 years after it’s initial opening. The bakery itself is stunning and has a real industrial theme about it. There is a beautiful seating area out the front, which allows you to sit down and relax with friends.

This is a massive operation, employing over 50 staff with their products being wholesaled all over the Newcastle area. As previously mentioned 🥧’s play second fiddle to the sourdough and pastries, that didn’t matter to me one bit, I was super keen to give them a go.

The menu board may be small but the flavours available were outstanding. What caught my eye was the cute 🥧 warmer on the bench. This was by far the best 🥧 warmer I had ever seen and I so wanted to pick it up and take it with me. Apart from the warmer, the beef stroganoff 🥧 caught my attention, and that was the one I decided to run with.

🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧

1. Value for Money – $9.50 is certainly on the high end of the scale and probably a bit overpriced, but it was a fairly decent sized 🥧 and some would consider beef stroganoff to sit in the gourmet range. 7.5/10

2. Meat/Fill Ratio – Yep full to the top. 10/10

3. Flavour – The flavour in this 🥧 couldn’t be faulted, it was absolutely beautiful. It was like having a beef stroganoff meal stuffed into pastry. The only negative was the strogg sauce was a was a tad runny which made eating this bad boy a little tricky. Overall the team have done a top job with the flavour. 8.5/10

4. Pastry – This is so bizarre, i’ve lost count at the amount of reviews I’ve done where the bakes have been too thick and underbaked, but in this case the pastry was a little over done and pics will show this. The bake thicknesses were perfect and the top bake had fantastic lamination. Although the sauce was a bit runny, the stability of this 🥧 held strong. The overall pastry color was a little dark however the pastry flavour was actually really nice. 6.5/10

5. Serving Temperature – A smidge hot but nothing major to worry about, only had to wait a short time before tucking in. 9.5/10

Overall Rating
🥧🥧 42/50 🥧🥧

The score may not reflect it, but this was a nice product and one I would have again no worries at all. The flavour was great and in my opinion doesn’t need to change at all. Yes the pastry color was dark, but the bake thicknesses were spot and top bake had great lamination. A few things to work on and nothing that cannot be tweaked. Cannot wait to get back and try another one.

100% add this place to your list. I guarantee you’ll leave this joint with a 🥧, a loaf of sourdough and assortment of pastries, you won’t be able to help yourself.

A huge thanks to Kyle and his team for their incredible hospitality and taking the time to show me around this successful and highly impressive bakery. This is a serious operation and what Kyle and Alice have achieved is nothing short of astonishing. To manage 50 plus staff and run a huge production team is absolutely massive and i take my hat off to these two rock stars.
