2024 🥧 Tour
Review No 58
Bakeaway
(Townsville QLD)

Ept 2024

With the Tully bakery review done and dusted it was time to continue my road trip further south. The plan was to spend 3-4 days in Townsville and visit as many bakeries as I possibly could. I’d been to Townsville many times before, but never hit the bakery scene. So this trip was all about visiting bakeries and smashing 🥧’s. First up on the list was the old school Bakeaway Bakery.

Bakeaway Bakery is located in a small shopping centre on Bamford Lane in the Townsville suburb of Kirwin, owned and operated by a legend of a bloke named Graham. The big fella has had this shop for just over 5 years but has been in the industry for an incredible 48 years.

This is another old school bakery with all the old school favourites. It’s a smaller sized bakery but the cabinets are filled to the brim with exceptional products that are all made from scatch by Graham and his baker George. The day of my visit George was busy baking cakes and slices, the look and smell of all this tucker was getting me very hungry. So after a brief tour of the joint, I made my way over to the warmer to check out the 🥧’s !!!

Stacks of flavours to choose from, but I had my eye on one in particular and that was the jalapeño and cheese. Kathy the shop assistant said this one was a must try and gee it looked good.

🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧

1. Value for Money – $6 was excellent value for a 🥧 of this size. It wasn’t huge by any standards but still very acceptable. At $6 you would be very happy with the value of this 🥧. 9.5/10

2. Meat/Fill Ratio – Full !!! As all 🥧’s should be and this was no different. No room left in this one at all. 10/10

3. Flavour – Very good !!! To be honest there wasn’t much wrong with this flavour. Only negative was it tasted a little salty but nothing over the top. The cheese and jalapeño ratios were spot on. While the jalapeños were a little hot, it wasn’t enough to blow your head off or be alarmed about. Great flavour 8.5/10

4. Pastry – Color, shape and stability were all first class and the shrinkage wasn’t far away either. The only shrinkage evident was on one side of the 🥧. The top bake and thickness was sensational, couldn’t be faulted. Only real negatives was the bottom bake and thickness. It was a fraction too thick, and slightly underbaked on one side and corner. I can say that the overall pastry flavor was terrific and the top was golden and flakey. Overall a couple of things to work on but nothing major. 7.5/10

5. Serving Temperature – Perfect serving temp !!! No Issues at all 10/10

Overall Rating
🥧🥧 45.5/50 🥧🥧

This was a quality product. Nothing fancy, just a good old 🥧 and it tasted great. Apart from a few little issues here and there, the overall standard was really good. The $6 price point was sensational value and the 🥧 was totally full as you would expect. The flavour was great as was the pastry flavor with only the bottom bake and thickness letting the score down. I really enjoyed this 🥧 and would have no hesitation having another one. Awesome job guys.

100% add this bakery to your list, it’s businesses like these that need our ongoing support. The 🥧’s and all the other products are top notch and you won’t be disappointed.

A massive thanks to Graham, shop assistant Kathy and George for taking the time out of their busy schedule and sharing their 🥧 journey with me. As mentioned earlier, these guys are your classic old-school bakers, and I absolutely loved this visit. Eating the 🥧’s are great don’t get me wrong but spending time with owners, listening to their stories and getting to know these wonderful people is what I enjoy the most. This family works incredibly hard and they deserve every success that comes their way. Happy New Year and stay in touch.
