Atherton Bakehouse
(Atherton QLD)

Sept 2024

With the temperature starting to soar in the NT, it was time to make a bee line down the Staurt Highway, across the Barclay and on to the Savannah Way eventually lobbing in the Atherton tablelands. This part of the journey took about a week and a bit with the most memorable stop being the newly refurbished Quamby Pub. This pub has been closed for many years and was recently reopened. It’s a great little overnighter highly recommended.

I have visited the tablelands area in 2022 and reviewed most of the bakeries back, but sadly the
Atherton Bakehouse. There was no chance I was going to miss this place on this trip, so I made a few calls and lined up a time to meet the owners.

Greg and Kerry have owned an operated this bakery for the last 19 years. The bakery originally opened in 1994 and was located in a different spot just up the road from its current location in Mabel Street. Greg’s been in the baking game for many years and only started making 🥧’s when they took this joint over. This is another classic country town old school bakery. There’s heaps of seating space to sit and relax and the cabinets are full to the brim with all your standard bakery favourites. The day of my visit Greg was super busy so there wasn’t much time for idle chit chat. After getting the brief tour and meeting the staff we made our way over to the warmer.

There is a great selection of 🥧’s on the menu, therefore making my decision on what 🥧 to review a little more difficult. After looking at the menu up and down for what seemed like an eternity. I eventually went with the old classic “Cheese and Bacon”

🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧

1. Value for Money – $6 was great value. It wasn’t massive in depth but the diameter was up to standard. At $6 it’s a very affordable 🥧. 8.5/10

2. Meat/Fill Ratio – Zero complaints here !!! this 🥧 was full. Great job team 10/10

3. Flavour – Really nice !!! The mince, bacon and cheese ratios were all perfect. The bacon had a really good flavour to it and wasn’t salty at all. The cheese was melted perfectly and wasn’t over the top. I really enjoyed this flavour, great work Greg. 8/10

4. Pastry – Overall the pastry was pretty good. The color on top was a tad blotchy, but the base was great. Top bake and thickness was spot on, while the bottom bake was a fraction to thick as was the sides. Stability was spot on and the pastry flavour was terrific. 7.5/10

5. Serving Temperature – No problems at all, perfect serving temperature. 10/10

Overall Rating
🥧🥧 44/50 🥧🥧

Greg and the team delivered a great product. The scores were consistent across the five categories with only a few minor tweaks needed here and there. The flavor was great, the 🥧 was full and at $6 it represented great value. If your looking for a old school “Cheese and Bacon” 🥧 this place has you covered. Awesome job guys, I thoroughly enjoyed this 🥧. 100% add this place to your 🥧 book it’s a little cracker.

To Greg and Kerry a huge thank you for having me in particularly when you were short staffed and rushed off your feet. You wouldn’t meet a more down-to-earth couple than these two and that’s why I absolutely love visiting bakeries and spending time with owners and staff. I absolutely love this visit. I have recently been informed that the bakery is now under contract and the new owner could potentially be in the place by the start of December. All the best guys with the next stage of your lives stay in touch.

The Atherton tablelands area is pretty awesome with so much to see and do. If chasing waterfalls is your thing you’ve come to the right place. Everything is relatively close and the area has so many picturesque towns worth exploring. I Had a few days at the Atherton Tablelands Holiday Park, it was reasonably priced clean and a walking distance into town. Highly recommended.
