Review no 42
Grain Bakery WA
(Perth WA)

My trip to Perth was quick but highly successful with 5 epic visits completed, plus spending quality time with my beautiful daughter. Before I jumped on the big bird back to the East Coast I had one more review locked in. Last on the list was Grain Bakery WA located in Shenton Park.

This is where I met owner Shane Pallott, his families story is quite remarkable. Pallot family pies originated in 1930 at the small bakery of Kondinin. The family was always on the go owning a bakery in every small town they lived in. After moving around a little the family had a bakery in Cunderdin until 1972. Whilst in Cunderdin the family also owned a bakery in Meckering from 1970 until the earthquake brought it down in 1972.

In that same year the family moved to the big city hoping for bigger and better things. And that was exactly what they got. In 1972 the famous Bake-Inn Pie Shop was developed selling famous pies, pasties and sausage rolls for 23 years, until 1998. At the same time from 1992-1997 the family opened up Tasty Bake in Garden City shopping centre. From then the family moved once again to Trackside Bakery, making and baking award winning pies, sausage rolls and pasties. Still using the same traditional recipes for 🥧’s and bread from four generations.

Then in 2021 Shane decided to open Grain Bakery WA which has now expanded now to 2 locations across Perth. The Shenton Park location is pretty funky and as soon as you arrive your greeted by a wicked cabinet display filled with all your usual favourites. My attention immediately turned to the 🥧 warmer, and I was already starting to think which 🥧 I was going choose for this review.

This was going to be a difficult decision as there was so many different flavors of 🥧’s to choose from. After what seemed an eternity, I eventually made a decision and went with the “steak, cheese and jalapeño”

🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧

1. Value for Money – $6.40 represents terrific value while the 🥧 wasn’t huge. The weight was still around the industry standard and the 🥧 was a decent size in diameter and depth. 9.5/10

2. Meat & Fill Ratio – About 90% full and you’d be pretty happy with that. There was a couple spots here and there that could’ve been filled, but overall excellent meat and fill ratio fill. 9/10

3. Flavour – Fantasic !!! Huge chunks of steak, an abundance of cheese and thick juicy jalapeños. This 🥧 was full of flavor as you would expect. The meat chunks were tender, while the cheese and jalapeños blended in beautifully. Be warned this 🥧 had a bit of kick to it and with every bite you were greeted by those juicy jalapeños. Great stuff guys loved it !!! 9/10

4. Pastry – The top pastry was golden and the perfect color, while the sides and bottom were a smidge pale. The shrinkage was also excellent. While the bottom bake was soft, the stability was excellent and the 🥧 didn’t move a muscle. The the bake thickness was terrific, however both the bottom and top bakes were slightly underdone. Overall a few things to work on, but nothing that cannot be tweaked or not fixed. 7/10

5. Serving Temperature – Perfect serving temp 10/10

Overall Rating
🥧🥧 44.5/50 🥧🥧

Overall this was a quality product and one I thoroughly enjoyed. The scores were very consistent road across all sections. Yeah there were a few things to work on in the pastry department, but as I’ve previously mentioned, nothing that major. For me, the best part was the flavor. The combined ingredients were all the perfect mix and this 🥧 tasted sensational. I have zero hesitation in recommending this floured 🥧.

If you’re in the area, traveling through, on holidays or simply love ya 🥧’s 100% add this bakery to your list. This was a great find and like I was you won’t be disappointed.

Shane is a terrific bloke and I cannot thank him enough for his time and hospitality. His families 🥧 story is quite incredible and I’m so honored and privileged to be able to share it with you guys. His passion for the industry is still burning as bright as ever as his passion for sharing ideas with other bakery owners. What a absolute legend !!!
