Wholegreen Bakery
(Sydney NSW)

The last of my Sydney bakery reviews saw me head out to the Sydney suburb of Alexandria. This was going to be a special review with one special lady. I was on my way out to the Wholegreen Bakery HQ to meet with owner Cherie. This bakery is 100% gluten free and is located at McCauley Street Alexandria. Wholegreen bakery has 2 other outlets one in the city and the other at Waverley.

Cherie has a serious passion for food and that was under threat when she was diagnosed with Celiac disease around the same time as her young daughter. Cherie decided to learn more from this newly recognised disease and wanted to help more people with this condition rediscover there love for food.

It’s been a crazy 10 years for Cherie. This has seen her open 3 stores, publish a cook book, become an ambassador for Celiac Australia, teach cooking lessons, numerous public speaking engagements and created the first viral “cardboard cake”

The first thing I noticed when I went to the Alexandria location was the impeccable cabinet display. While only small the food on display was out of this world. I had my eye on numerous items including the 🥧’s. Speaking of 🥧’s the selection of on offer was more than generous and for this review decided to go with the “slow cooked beef”

🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧

1. Value for Money – Tough one to score !!! $10.90 is up there for a 🥧, but this 🥧and bakery is 100% gluten free and the ingredients used are NOT cheap especially flour. Also I was close to the Sydney CBD and cost of living is higher. The 🥧 was a decent size in diameter and weight. Overall very good value 8/10

2. Meat Ratio – Pretty good !!! Around 95% full. The middle had sunken a fraction but nothing major 9.5/10

3. Flavour – Slow cooked grass feed beef, carrots, celery, time, tomato and Cherie’s secret herbs and spices !!! The overall flavour was sensational, the combination of ingredients was a master stroke. Nothing to work on here as the flavor was perfect 10/10

4. Pastry – Color, shape, stability and shrinkage were all excellent. The top bake was cooked beautifully and was the perfect thickness. The bottom bake was a smidge thick and I mean smidge and was ever so slightly underbaked. The pastry did have a nice taste to it particularly the top flake. A few minor points to work of and points that could easily be fixed 9/10

5. Serving Temperature – Serving temp was perfect no issues at all 10/10

Overall Rating
🥧🥧 46.5/50 🥧🥧

This was a beautiful product. The best way to describe this 🥧 was like having mums cassarole plonked into pastry. The flavour was excellent and the assortment of added ingredients were the perfect blend. I can also confirm that the pastry tasted like real pastry not cardboard as perception has it. Only a few minor points to work on, nothing major. If your gluten free or not, this particular flavoured 🥧 is defiantly worth trying.

I cannot thank Cherie enough for her time and allowing me to share her incredible 🥧 journey. As mentioned earlier this amazing women has done everything, but still has the drive and passion to do a lot more about educating people about celiac disease. This visit was more than a review for me it was a huge learning experience on a disease I knew little about. All the products I sampled were simply stunning and if I had a blind fold on you wouldn’t have known they were gluten free. Wholegreen bakery is an absolute must visit gluten free or not, you’re going to love this place. Your a dead set superstar Cherie all the best to you and your family.
