2024 🥧 Tour
Review no 19
The Heritage Bakery
(Milton NSW)
The next couple of reviews were done back in March when i did a little impromptu tour down the NSW south coast. The little trip had 2 purposes, the first was the find a few quality golf courses which I did and the second was to visit two well down bakeries in the area. The first bakery on my list was the The Heritage Bakery, Milton
Milton is a small village in the south coast region of NSW within the city of Shoalhaven and right on the Princess Highway you will find the bakery. As the name suggests the building that the bakery sits on is heritage listed and you will be instantly drawn to the place.
It was the building itself that drew current owner Bryan’s immediate attention and not long after he saw the place he made an offer to purchase the bakery and the heritage listed building. Bryan has absolutely zero baking experience what so ever and was in the real estate game, but under the trusted guidance of Linda the team leader and captain this place has grown rapidly and now employs over 30 staff.
The bakery itself has more parking and more toilets 😂 that any other bakery I’ve been into and the cabinet display was simply stunning. The variety here is next level and everything is fresh and made in house. My eyes were wandering everywhere including Heritage Bakeries latest attraction “Bodalla Icecream” OMG the flavours were incredible, but I was there for the 🥧’s so I wandered over to the 🥧 warmer for a closer inspection.
The 🥧 menu was more than generous with over 12 different flavours to choose from. I did sample four different 🥧’s during my visit but opted to go for the classic “Steak, Bacon and Cheese” for this weeks review. it’s been ages since I’ve reviewed at SBC and I was keen to see how this one held up.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – $7.50 was creeping up there for a standard SBC, but this was a decent sized 🥧 and weighed in slightly above industry standard. The depth was good as was the diameter. Overall it might be considered by some to be on the high side but still a very reasonable and affordable. 🥧 8.5/10
2. Meat Ratio – Just as you would expect this 🥧 was totally full. Great job 10/10
3. Flavour – SBC are not one of my favourite flavoued 🥧’s, but the flavour in this bad boy was superb. The meat was cooked beautifully and you could taste the real bacon with every bite. The most impressive part was the cheese wasn’t overpowing and was the perfect mix. Great job guys this flavour was very impressive. 9.5/10
4. Pastry – Apart from the pastry bakes and thicknesses the overall pastry was pretty good. The color, shape, shrinkage and stability were all faultless. The bakes were slightly underdone and the base and side walls were too thick. The pastry flavour was excellent and the top of the 🥧 in particular tasted awesome. Overall a few things to work on but nothing major 6.5/10
5. Serving Temperature – Perfect temp 10/10
Overall Rating
🥧🥧 44.5/50 🥧🥧
Despite the score being in the mid 40’s this was a cracking 🥧 as was all the flavors I tried. I loved the flavour particularly the bacon and the cheese. With every bite you got a combination of all the major ingredients and the cheese flavoured top was excellent. Not many major points to work only the bakes and bake thicknesses need tweaking. As far as SBC 🥧’s go this one was a little pearler and I enjoyed every minute of it.
As huge thanks to Bryan and Linda for their amazing hospitality. What Bryan has done to the place since he took over is incredible. I’ve said it so many times you don’t need to have baking experience to run a successful bakery and Bryan with the help of his captain have a great team that all work together.
My late mum used to make the best butterfly cakes on the planet and I mentioned this to Linda a few days prior to my visit. When I arrived at the bakery Linda had made me my 2 fresh butterfly cakes and OMG they were sensational. This was a lovely touch and I cannot thank Linda enough for her kind hearted gesture.
This bakery and the town of Milton is 100% worth the visit. As mentioned earlier the bakery has heaps of parking and it’s a great joint to meet up with friends and smash some outstanding food. If your a golfing tragic like I am the Hilltop golf course at Mollymook was first class.
