Meningie Bakery
(Meningie SA)
February, 2026
Our time exploring Robe and Kingston has come to a end and it was time once again to hitch up the van and continue on. The plan was to come around the bottom end of the Fleurieu Peninsula and spend a couple of weeks here before heading to Adelaide. On my last visit here in 2023, i missed the small town of Meningie and the towns legendary bakery. When I was making plans for this trip I wasn’t about to make the same mistake again.
Situated at the northern end of the Coorong on the shores of the Lake Albert, Meningie combines all the charm of a small country town with stunning natural beauty of the Coorong and freshwater Lower Lakes Albert and Alexandrina of the Murray River.
The Meningie Bakery is situated on the main thoroughfare in town, just behind the Sip n Save bottle shop. With over 30 years of operation, current proprietor Christine has been at the helm for just over a decade. Prior to acquiring the bakery, Christine had a distinguished nursing career spanning more than two decades. Since owning the place, she has successfully transformed the bakery into a popular destination for locals and tourists seeking exceptional, freshly baked goods.
The bakery itself is quite big and has a huge selection of drinks as well as a massive cabinet display and full sandwich bar. The 🥧 menu is also quite extensive with over 16 different flavours to choose from. On top of the 16 on the menu the baking team will often come up with a few monthly favourites such as “Butter Chicken” or the classic “Cheeseburger” 🥧.
After checking out the menu i decided to go with something a little different and my choice was a “Beef Burgundy” 🥧. It’s been quite a while since ive had one of these flavours and this one looked fantastic.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – $7.50 was well priced in my opinion as this was a decent sized round 🥧 with great depth. It also weighed well above the industry standard at around 275 grams. At $7.50 this bad boy was well priced 8.5/10
2. Meat/Fill Ratio – Very good and about 95% full. A smidge more could have been filled under the lid, but that’s about it. Overall sensational fill ratio. 9.5/10
3. Flavour – Excellent !! I really enjoyed it and each bite got better and better. Slow cooked beef added cheese and red burgundy wine. The wine flavour was clearly evident with each bite, and the cheese quantity was perfect. Overall I thought the flavour was great, loved it. 9.5/10
4. Pastry – Apart from both bakes being slightly underdone the overall standard of the pastry was superb. The top color was a clear standout, it was nice and golden with limited shrinkage. The shape was great as was the stability. The texture and pastry taste was great which is extremely important. Get the bakes right and this pastry would have been perfect. 8.5/10
5. Serving Temperature – Perfect serving temp 10/10
Overall Rating
🥧🥧 46/50 🥧🥧
This was a great product and I’m so glad i chose this particular flavour to review. The flavour was devine and that red wine sauce was a standout. All the scoring categories were very consistent and apart from the pastry bakes there wasn’t much to work on or tweak. It’s not often I review a “Beef Burgundy” but this one hit the spot and for all the right reasons. Zero issues from my end and highly recommended. Also the flavour in Desh’s “Butter Chicken” was sensational, this 🥧 was a little ripper too.
This was a great bakery and one you shouldn’t miss. Heaps of parking available especially for caravans and plenty of products to choose from. Add this place to your travel plans you won’t disappointed.
Christine I cannot thank you enough for your incredible hospitality and taking the time out of your busy schedule to show me around. You have done a sensational job here and your team is amazing. Your front of house staff are fabulous, then Desh, Karlia and the rest of the team do a sterling job out the back. You have achieved all this with no baking experience and battling a health issue along the journey. This review was so much fun and you will certainly see me again that’s for sure. Stay safe.
Meningie is a lovely little town and 100% worth popping into. The walk along the lake is stunning and the history in this place is quite incredible. If you’re after a great little overnight stop over check out the Golf Club. $10 a night, very safe and walking distance to town.
As always thanks for the ongoing support and keep supporting 🇦🇺 bakeries and don’t forget to invite all your friends to the page.
